Cafe Hawelka in Vienna

Chill place. Classic feel. Good milk-based espresso drinks. The apple strudel isn't world class like at landstradt, but still pretty good. A nice place to hang for a few hours to kill time. The owner is quite friendly and shakes your hand/thanks you when you leave. It doesn't get any more nostalgic than that.

Stepped into Cafe Hawelka seems like stepping back in time. With warmly dimmed environment, great coffee and just a great place to spend some time here.

This is a traditional Viennese cafe located on a small street. It offers great coffee, cakes, and of course, apple strudel.

Disappointing! STAY AWAY! We only went there due to high reviews. Asked for a menu, waiter tells us he can tell us the menu. Although the pictures other people posted shows a lot more, he only gave us three choices. Apparently there's a hand-written menu on the wall though. No pictures or food showcased anywhere. Apple strudle was cold, dry and mushy. Crust not flaky at all. Chocolate cake was dry as well and tasted slightly better than sweetened cardboard. You can find better in a grocery mart! Coffee was decent. Two coffees and two deserts for €18.20, waiter reminded us that tip is not included. I left no tip!

Beautiful coffee.. this place is not for the faint hearted newbie traveller. There is no menu, service is true to local culture. Amazing coffee, good strudel and cake but wouldn't scream about the sweets. Has a lively and cosy atmosphere and would recommend for a short stop!

Very old fashion cafe in Vienna. None of the modern fancy stuff. Good English speaking servers. Plum cake we had was fresh and warm.

We had classic traditional Austrian chocolate cake with cream, it was delicious. Waiters were kind of not interested in guiding us, they ignored when we asked for a place to sit, we asked and he just kept on walking. And also when the other one brought the extra service with dessert, he gave a fork directly to me, while he was supposed to put it onto the table, it was rude.

Traditionally, waiters are quite unfriendly at this place. Regular guests are used to this anomaly at a HOSPITALITY place, but by no exception the newcomers are cought surprised by the patronizing tone of the staff serving them.

Horrible service!!The place is super busy with hordes of tourists and if you are lucky to find a table, you will be rewarded with indifference and mediocre quality. I am sure there are better cafes in Vienna, although it worths dropping by if you are around, just to check out the vintage flair and imagine how nice this place must have been 60 years ago..and then go somewhere else to try good coffe and cakes...

Crowded, loud, expensive, unfriendly. I must say it has a special atmosphere but that's the only positive about it. Waiter was cursing other guest which is big no-no in my opinion even if they don't hear it or can't understand it.

It might be very local but a no menu policy, rude waiters and a very limited offer make it a no go for foreigners. I think I got fleeced, but no receipt was provided.. €43 for two mini goulash soups, a beer a small water and two coffees

Had coffees and cakes in the roasterie (opposite to the main cafe).Lovely cakes, great coffee and a charming young man looked after us. €13 for 2 people. Not inexpensive but usual Vienna prices.

Not exactly a relaxing experience, but service was super fast! Just don't expect modern conveniences such as milk alternatives. Nice art of the wall if you have time to see it.

Stingy on stars for this place, because the waiter has been bit rude. I kindly asked if I could take another table rather than the small table facing the entrance door, but he said that “you are alone, so maybe no”. I don’t like this attitude toward solo visitors, and it’s 21:30 on a weekday, that the place is not even crowded. Besides, sweet rolls are not exactly my style, and they are expensive. Bear in mind that, below 30e they don’t accept credit cards. On the bright side, order a few things and it won’t be difficult to reach 30e :)

Great coffee, apfelstrudel and sachertorte! The sachertorte isn't on the menu but they do serve it. Orders also happen really fast. However, staff isn't too friendly, always rushing and even a tad passive aggressive. They also don't have a menu on paper, just a tiny blackboard on the wall that's hardly visible.

Wanted to like this place given its cool back story. Feels super divey and casual except it’s NOT bc the waiter was SOO rude. we asked for a drinks menu and were denied one. Despite my friend who’d already been having been given one just a few days ago. SUPER RUDE. do not recommend.

Our first coffee house experience. Wonderful traditional interior, no menu but lots of great choices. We waited *patiently* for the rolls with plum jam centres, you could smell them as they baked. Had to go back twice to try them again.

Step back in time! No menu and somewhat gruff waiter but the eggs and bacon i got were delicious and exactly what I wanted. Would definitely come back.

This place used to be much nicer. It got quite touristic in the meantime and as soon as you finish your coffee, they take the cup away and keep asking you if you want something else every two minutes or so, so that you'd leave and make place for new customers.

Amazing strudel! It's home made and the owner was very kind to us, he mentioned it's his mother in law's recipe and it certainly was better than any strudel I have had.

Good place but overpriced and there was no menu as other people say. Also the waiter asked me “do you want changes?” when I was making a payment. And he added the information that service charges were not included in the bill like he was telling me to leave the tips for him. Even if leaving tips is kind of unspoken rule, his attitude was not really nice. And actually the service is just average or less than average. I ended up feeling disappointed.

An absolute classic and a legend in Vienna. You better don’t go there though in the hope to stay for long or you’ll constantly need to consume as it is a very popular place.

Beware - tourist scam. Overcrowded and overpriced place with poor interior, service is more or less the same as interior. You’d better choose Zacher or Cafe Central. Never again!

Famous for some reason. Incredibly overpriced for the below-average atmosphere. Service personnel even more grumpy and worse than the average Viennese café (and that's saying something). The famous Buchteln are good but ridiculously expensive for what they are.Good for: People who really want Buchteln.Bad for: Tourists who want to take nice pictures, people who want a cozy and relaxed atmosphere (it's just not that nice).

Worth the wait if you haven't been to a real cafe house in Vienna. The strudel (both apple and cheese) were great. Personal preference was the ape though 😁. Friendly staff. Be sure to have cash.....

Vienna and it's absolute best! Loved the coffee and the cacophony of music created by the conversation of people in the room. The interiors really took me back in time, to one of those vintage movies. Would love to come back!

Nice venue, but just desserts! They had run out of all savory foods. It does feel less glam and more authentic artsy place. Total recommend for tourists, even if service is a little cold and food is just ok.

I wandered in here because I wanted a coffee. What I got blew my mind - no menu, just some lovely people inside who offered a couple types of strudel or cake and whatever coffee or espresso I asked for. When my cheese strudel came out, I had no idea that’s what it was going to be. It was sweet, but borderline savory. The pastry crust was super thin and the cheese layer was easily over an inch thick! It was sort of eggy, in a good way, with a dusting of powder sugar. Really a special experience. 10/10!

Its a traditional Viennese Cafe, and I love it here, eventhough it could have lost some of its charm throughout the years. I am not judging the bad reviews, the prices are quite high, but you are in the center of Vienna. You don’t go here for a Flat white from organic farm, I have never had a coffee here, because that would be just silly I think. Been many times and always had the best appel strudel and hot chocolate and never had a problem with the staff.

Year is 2020, yet, no cards accepted. Should be the first information they give you as soon as you enter. They dont have a paper menu also, so this info is nowhere. After you eat and you want to pay you have to go out across the city under snow to try and find a working ATM to get cash. CASH. Its probably been 10 years since I used cash last time. Poor service.

Reasonably priced for this part of town. We were lucky to enjoy some freshly baked pastries, recommended by our waiter. Fast service. Enjoyable atmosphere, surrounded by art pieces and photographs in a dimlit and intimate ambiance.

I loved the atmosphere, the old furnitures and the lighting. We got a black coffee and it was fine. I didn't appreciate getting forced to order 2 items, as the waiter wouldn't accept our order of 1 item only, as we were 2 people. One coffee and 1 small water was almost 10€.

Cafe is rich in history and a cosy find, however they wouldn’t allow our party of two to only order one drink which was peculiar, and they only accept cash which is advertised. So we had to run around trying to find a cash point whilst the waiter kept our wallet.

The waiter didn't give us a menu and instead listed what they had. Everyone has to order a drink even if you don't want any of their options. We ordered a coffee, tea and an apple strudel which somehow came out to 16€. The strudel was good. The real menu is actually posted behind a hat rack hidden away.

A great spot with lots of character, but HORRIBLY overpriced. There is no menu, only what you are told when you sit down. This is fine, but there is no price supplied with each item. Bill was supplied from memory. Service was average, and THEN suggested we leave a tip as well after being presented with an extortionate bill. Lesson learned l, should have checked the reviews.

Great coffee with great service. Lovely spot to relax while exploring Vienna. The waiter reassuringly told us one does not rush in a Viennese coffee house so we stayed a while.

This is a small old fashioned coffee shop in Vienna. We did not get any menu, waiter told us what we can order. End of the day they did not have full selection. We got simple cappuccino and apple strudel was nice and tasty. Worth to try even if you have to wait.

There is no menu only what you are told when you sit down. No price supplied with each item you order so you have no idea what the bill would be. Service was average and the FOOD was below average with poor selection between 2 deserts and 2 options for lunch (soup...). Cant recommend better read the reviews before you go or at least know what you are stepping in...

Stopped here in the midst of our walking tour of Vienna for a break, and eased right into a patio table for some cocktails. We were pleasantly surprised by the historic and dark interior decor and camaraderie of the locals. We became so relaxed that we didn't want to leave, and in fact ended our tour for the day. This place felt like home.
